"Born in Catania on 1958, Massimo Siragusa is highly
talented in color photography. His professional career in
photography began in 1987; two years later, after a series of
underwater portraits, he won the Italian selection of the
European Kodak Award. After moving to Milano in 1990, Siragusa
joins Contrasto.
He carried out many reportages in Italy and abroad. His
attention has been focused on various issues, as the Vatican
and the Pope. His pictures have regularly been published in
magazines such as the New York Times Magazine, Time, Newsweek,
El Pais, Blanco y Negro, Die Zeit, Mediterranee, Travel
Leisure, Geo (Germany and Japan), Le Figaro Magazine, The
NewYorker, Merian, "D"di Repubblica, US News.
On June 1992, his reportage on Italian miners was awarded with
the first prize in the CGIL (Italian union) contest on the
theme "The Changing Work". He also took part to many projects
and relative catalogues: 24 hours in Cyberspace", "Rome and the
Jubilee", "Etna and its Territory" and "Knowledge of a Value"
(a reportage of public employement in Italy assigned by
Ministry of Public Office.
In the edition 1997 of the World Press Photo, he won the second
best prize in the "Daily Life" category with his "Need for a
miracle" reportage. His work about circus, called "The Magic
Circle" was chosen by LEICA International for the 1998 Edition
of Photokina, in Köln, as well as being awarded with the first
prize at the World Press Photo 1999, "Arts and Entertainment"
category, and the Italian section of the Fuji Film Euro Press
Photo Awards 1999 .
He held many personal exhibitions: "International Encounters
for Photography in Arles", "International Encounters for
Photography in Alberobello", LEICA Gallery-Polyphoto in Milano,
Turin's 7th Photographical Biennal, EOS Gallery in
Milano,
In the same year at organized by the Italian foundation for
Photography the reportage "Need for a miracle" is displayed.
This same exhibit is displayed at the Galleria del Credito
Valtellinese in Florence, Museo del Folclore in Rome and Casa
Museo Stesicorea and Libreria Cavallotto in Catania.
For a few years now he's also been worker as photography
teacher and advertising photographer, working on many
advertising jobs to promote farms such as Lavazza, IGP, Kodak,
ENI, BAT Italia, Alfa Romeo and the Presidency of the Council
of Ministers.
He published the following books:
